A Thinker's Reflections Blog #8: The True Benefit of a Placement (and Volunteering)

Preparing for a career within the workplace is no easy feat. Indeed, it takes a lot of time because of such factors like networking, having the relevant experience, obtaining the necessary amount of education, and demonstrating the appropriate skill set you have for the tasks that could be assigned to you.

With all of those variables kept in mind, there is no wonder why a placement opportunity for students is considered to be extremely valuable. Already, I can observe the benefits of a second placement experience, particularly as I have the room to make mistakes without the same kind of scrutiny as a normal job would expect.

A placement is virtually the same thing as volunteering, when it comes down to it, and therefore, I would encourage any student reading this to truly consider volunteering at an early stage in their education. It will pay dividends for you in more ways than one. Specifically, there is one benefit of placement and volunteering I forgot to mention: self-discovery. By taking on a placement or volunteering opportunity, you have the chance to learn upfront, and through practical application, what you like and dislike.

If there is one thing I will take away from my placement experience, it is that in order to keep yourself marketable to employers, you must constantly upgrade and improve upon the things you learned from your last contribution to an organization.
